Contact lenses are one of the modern methods of correcting vision and offer various advantages vis-à-vis spectacles. The advantages that contact lenses offer are:-

Contact lenses and my prescription

Will wearing Contact lenses stablise my power?

This is one of the biggest myths present regarding Contact lenses, Contact lenses do not have any impact on the stablistaion of refractive error or power as changes in power happen due to changes happening within the body or the eye and have a strong hereditary link. Hence contact lenses only help in clear vision but do not impact stabilization of power.

What is Astigmatism?

Approximately 2/3 of people who need vision correction have some degree of astigmatism. With astigmatism, light rays entering the eye focus in two different locations, requiring a more complex lens for correction to see clearly. This can result in shadowing or a difference in clarity for vertical lines compared to horizontal lines, for example.

Can contact lenses correct Astigmatism?

Yes, normal conventional lenses do not correct astigmatism but only mask it but there are special lenses named Toric Soft lenses which can correct astigmatism due to cylindrical component being present.

Can Soft Contact Lenses be prescribed in lower spectacle prescriptions like 0.50 D or 1 D?

Contact lenses can easily be worn by people with lower spectacle prescriptions too and they are equally effective in providing the benefits to the wearer like providing crisp, clear vision at all times. In fact contact lenses are available from -0.25 D onwards.

Are there contact lenses available for those who have presbyopia?

Yes. Bausch + Lomb Soflens Multifocals are lenses meant for people who require bifocal glasses or have presbyopia. Different types of Contact lenses

What are disposable lenses?

Disposable lenses are lenses which are worn for a stipulated /Specific period of time (Quarterly/Monthly or more frequently) and are replaced with a fresh pair after the recommended duration is over.

What advantages Disposable lenses offer over Conventional lenses?

Disposable lenses offer various advantages over conventional lenses:-
  1. Disposable lenses are replaced regularly hence deposit formation on them is lesser. Less deposits means more comfortable lens wear
  2. Disposable lenses offer more oxygen to the eyes than conventional lenses hence keep eyes “Healthy”
  3. Disposable lenses are more hygienic as fresh pair is used after specific duration by the user.
  4. Disposable lenses offer the convenience of spare pair at hand in cases of emergency like lens spoilage, deposition, lost etc. Also in case of frequent changes in power a contact lens wearer should opt for disposable lenses as they can exchange the sealed lenses with the new power.
  5. Longer wearing time with disposable lenses as they give more oxygen to eye.
  6. Chances of Contact lens related infections & complications reduce in disposable lens schedule compared to Conventional lenses

Lens care & maintenance

What do I do if I experience redness/irritation?

Off your lenses immediately. Causes of irritation could be any of the following. Consult your eye-care practitioner to help you identify and solve your problems.
  1. Torn or broken lens
  2. Make-up or eyelashes trapped under your lens
  3. High level of deposits on your lenses
  4. Prolonged wear beyond the recommended hours especially true for conventional lenses and not for disposable lenses
  5. Dryness in the eyes because of working in dry weather conditions

Contact lenses wearing and replacement schedules

How long in a day Can I wear my Contact lenses?

A conventional lens can be worn for 10-12 hours while the disposable lenses can be worn for a longer duration like 14-16 hours or practically to say “all waking hours”. There is also a category known as Continuous wear category( e.g. - PureVision) in which one can wear lenses for a duration of 30 days without removal & external care. ( Contact lens wearing time in a day is dependent upon the amount of Oxygen which the lens allows to reach your eye. Depending upon the water content & Central thickness of the lens the duration of wear differs.)

Teenage questions

Contact lenses are less convenient than spectacles.

Contact lens handling (insertion & removal) can be easily learnt in 20-25 minutes. After initial handling it is just a matter of practice. Regular contact lens wearers, who take proper care of their eyes and lenses, will tell you that it is actually as easy as brushing your teeth or shaving every morning .Infact, most women's make up or bath routines are far more complicated than wearing a pair of lenses.

Contact lenses are very soft and get damaged faster.

Contact lenses are made up of the materials which are very flexible hence are soft. They do not get damaged if handled carefully (as per the instructions given by the practitioner). You would be taught the lens handling part before the lenses are given to you so this can easily be managed.

Are cosmetic/Coloured lenses safe to wear?

Coloured lenses are similar to any other soft contact lenses. The colour printed on them does not cause any harm to the eye as it is bio- compatible. These lenses have an advantage as anyone who has normal vision can also wear them and enhance looks by changing the colour of his/her eyes. Please choose branded good quality coloured lenses and don't exchange it withyour friends.

Sports and Contact lenses

Will Contact lenses fall off from my eyes during sports etc?

Soft Contact lenses, once properly placed on the eye does not fall off as the lens edges are held by the lids. Even players like Saurav Ganguly, Anil Kumble use soft contact lenses for better performance & models like Yukta Mookhy & Aditi Govitrikar also use them.

Can I swim with Contact lenses?

Swimming with contact lenses is not recommended as swimming pool water is contaminated & has chemicals in it like chlorine that can be absorbed by contact lenses. In case it is a must then good quality protective swimming goggles should be worn to prevent water coming in contact with lenses. At the same time one should change lenses more frequently (Disposable lenses).

Will Crying damage my contact lenses?

Crying does not cause any harm to contact lenses. In fact contact lenses are kept moist in the eye by our tears. The only thing which can happen is blurred vision during crying.

Can contact lenses fall behind my eye or get lost in the eye?

Contact lenses cannot fall behind your eyes as Conjunctiva, which is a thin transparent membrane covering the lids from the inner side, does not have any gap for the lens to fall behind.

Can I Sleep with Contact lenses?

Sleeping with Contact lenses is not at all recommended except Continuous Wear lenses. When one sleeps with contact lenses on the oxygen supply reaching the eye is drastically reduced, due to lack of oxygen the eye is more prone to infections. Also as tear formation stops during sleep hence due to reduced tears the lens can get stuck on the eye. In short reduced oxygen supply & less tears lead to increased risk of infection & complications with Contact lens wear.

Are contact lenses suitable for Indian environment

Can I wear contact lenses while driving and in dusty environment?

Soft contact lenses can easily be worn while a person is driving, they do not fall off the eye or slide in the eye as they are held by the lids. In dusty environment too, the dust particles will not be able to irritate the eye as soft contact lenses drape the cornea.

Can I wear contact lenses in polluted cities and roads?

Yes you can wear lenses wherever you stay. If you live in polluted environment please do be extra cautious about cleaning of your lenses and do remember follow the stipulated time for changing your lenses. If your work makes you be on the roads for high periods of time/your exposure to polluted environment is high please use monthly disposable lenses as they are healthier for your eyes. Contact lenses and make-up

Can one wear make-up along with soft contact lenses?

One can wear make-up with soft contact lenses with some simple tips that need to be kept in mind are:

DO:
  1. Apply your lenses before you apply makeup.
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly before you apply your lenses. (Even moisturizer or sunscreen can cause stinging or other problems, so wash up!).
  3. Wear your lenses before you wear your make-up.
  4. Apply eye shadow and liner gently, so you don't jostle or damage your lenses.
  5. Use oil-free and fragrance-free eye makeup.
  6. Use water-resistant mascara and eyeliner to prevent flaking and smudging.
  7. Replace eyeliner and mascara every three months.
  8. Call your eye care professional if you have any redness, pain, swelling or irritation.
  9. Remove your lenses before you remove your eye make-up.
  10. Remove all eye makeup every day. Use a hypoallergenic remover, preferably oil-free.
DON'T:
  1. Don't wear makeup (or apply your lenses) if your eyes are swollen, red or infected.
  2. Don't share makeup.
  3. Don't share contact lenses.
  4. Don't apply eyeliner to your inner lid (inside the lashes).
  5. Don't wear your lenses when you go to the hair salon. Even “second-hand” spray and fumes can damage your lenses.
  6. Don't wear your lenses while you colour or perm your hair.
  7. Don't use aerosols (hairspray, etc.) with your eyes open.

Contact lenses are bad for the eyes/can cause infection in the eyes?

Contact lenses are a safe method for vision correction and the fact that 8 lakh people in India use lenses specks for itself. Contact lenses are made up of state -of- the-art materials which pass enough oxygen to the eye keeping the eyes healthy. Special designs ensure that they are comfortable to the wearer. Any adverse reaction due to contact lens wear is “Self limiting” and quickly disappears soon after the lenses are removed. If a contact lens wearer follows basic hygiene and instructions given by their eye care practitioners, contact lenses are very safe. A contact lens trial would be able to convince you on the comfort level offered by lenses.

Contact lenses are expensive?

Contact lenses offer a lot of advantages to a spectacle wearer and if we weigh the benefits to the cost they are not very expensive. Besides, due to technology improvements in contact lens material and increased demand they are very much affordable. What's more, there are a whole range of contact lenses available to suit a wide variety of budgets.

What is the minimum age of wearing Contact lenses?

There is no specific age for contact lens wearing as in certain medical conditions it is fitted to infants also. However the age at which contact lenses can worn for cosmetic reasons depends on the contact lens wearer's understanding of the lens care and contact lenses overall. If the contact lens wearer is mature enough to understand the maintenance & care then even a 10 year old can also be fitted with contact lenses.
